3 Ways To Reach “Jog-Mode” Like A Pro

3 Ways to Reach “Jog-Mode” Like a Pro

Jog-mode is that mental place everyone who gets into jogging eventually reaches. It’s when a switch is flipped and jogging no longer sucks. You know? When you first start hitting the pavement or treadmill, or jump back into it after a 4-6 month break, it’s rough!
Your breathing has to adjust, your gastrocnemius (calf) muscles are aching, your thighs aren’t used to it and your feet are killing you! Eventually though your mind calms down, your muscle memory kicks in and it becomes a pleasurable experience: jog mode. Some regular commenters on the Fitness Studio blog asked for advice, so here are three ways to get into jog-mode quicker.

#1 Tackle a Problem

Start off with a slow jog and then pick a problem to solve, an errand that needs doing, a letter to be written, a work task that needs some brainstorming, etc. 90% of the time what really makes jogging a pain in the beginning is the mind concentrating on everything and perceiving it as “painful” or “uncomfortable” or “omg!”
Focus. Stick to the problem and let associative thought take you anywhere it wants to go other than to somewhere negative. Keep it upbeat, positive, motivational, inspiring, or concentrate on problem solving. With the mind not getting in its way the body can find a rhythm quicker.

#2 Become a Role Model

Anyone out jogging that can be seen by other people has a chance of inspiring someone to get in shape. It’s true! Think about it. How many times have you seen someone really getting into fitness and enjoying themselves and thought to yourself, “Man, I need to get back in the gym!”
The beauty of it is when you go off thinking about others, be they folks walking on the other side of the road or people driving past, you’re not focusing on how hard jogging can be. Plus, when you start jogging for other people’s benefit rather than just your own it provides energy from that spiritual place inside us.

#3 For the Musically Inclined

Have you ever seen those commercials of street bands that take all kinds of random things and make really complex beats? They really get your hips shaking! Now, with headphones off there’s tons of things to build a beat with while you’re jogging. Check it out:

  • The sound of your feet as they hit the pavement.
  • The sound of your shoulders bouncing (an internal sound of course).
  • The movement of your arms/legs.
  • The frequency, depth and length of your breaths.

You would be amazed at the complexity of beats you can create with all those things happening at once as you cruise by. From the outside you’ll look like any other jogger just doing their thing. But on the inside, you’ll be running to an amazing physical beat you embody that’s all your own. Pretty cool, right?
For some reaching regular jog-mode can take a year. For others it could take anywhere from 5-8 months of consistent jogging. It all depends on where and how you tend to jog. If you’re finding it a struggle, try one or all of those three jog-mode techniques.
